Bank of Baroda Rashtrabhasha Samman

In a multilingual country like India, the use of all Indian languages is important as it adds to the diversity and rich heritage of the nation. All the languages of the country are playing a vital role in nation building and enriching the literary and cultural heritage of the nation. Keeping this in mind, the award ‘Bank of Baroda Rashtrabhasha Samman’ seeks to promote mutual interchange amongst Indian languages and to make the best Indian literature available to the general public, in Hindi. The award will also encourage literary translation work in the country.

Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Bank Shri Sanjiv Chadha announced the commencement of 'Bank of Baroda Rashtrabhasha Samman' at a special session held at the Jaipur Literature Festival on January 20, 2023. This award has been established by the Bank to encourage and promote literary works in Indian languages.

This award will be conferred on to both the original author of selected Novel and the translator who undertakes translation of the book into Hindi from the original Indian language (included under 8th Schedule of the Constitution). Under this award, every year the Author and Hindi translator of the award winning Novel will get ₹21.00 lakh and ₹15.00 lakh respectively. Moreover, for the other five shortlisted entries, the Author and Hindi translator will be awarded with ₹3.00 lakh and ₹2.00 lakh each respectively.

The Bank has taken a significant step for promoting literature in Indian languages and their outstanding translation in Hindi by establishing this award. This initiative by the Bank will not only encourage the translation of literature written in Indian languages into Hindi, but will also encourage quality creative writing in Indian languages. In both the ways, it will give a boost to creative writing in India. This award will prove to be a very effective tool to promote literary translation work in India.

With the establishment of this award, Bank of Baroda will make significant contribution to all three fields i.e., Indian languages, literature and translation. The Award seeks to recognise outstanding literary works in Indian languages as it will be given to both, the Author and the Hindi translator.
